Using the Library
Borrowing, simply.
How to borrow, renew and reserve, and what to expect when you do.
Who can borrow
The Library's primary patrons are the members of Council and Management, faculty, students and staff of Central University, and permitted research and visiting scholars.
Present a valid identification card when you borrow. Everything borrowed in your name is your responsibility, and borrowing privileges cannot be passed from one person to another.
Lending
Students, lecturers and staff borrow books for a set period. Ask at the circulation desk of any library for the loan period that applies to you.
Inter-library lending
If the book you need is in another Central University library, or in another library altogether, ask. Library staff will borrow it for you on request.
Renewing
General Collection items can be renewed twice, unless another reader has asked for the item. Renew before the due date.
Reserving a book that is out
If the book you need is checked out, go to the circulation desk with a valid ID and place a recall or hold request. When the item comes back, a notice is sent to you. The book is then held at the circulation desk for 10 days. After the tenth day it goes back on the shelf.
Looking after what you borrow
- Do not write in, cut or damage any book. Report any defect or damage to library staff.
- Do not trace pictures or figures from books.
- Borrowers are responsible for damage to a book in their charge and pay the cost of damaged books.
- Borrowers pay for the loss of any borrowed book.
What happens when books are returned late or damaged is set out in the offences and sanctions section of the Library policy.
